Wisdom Tooth Extraction
Third molars (wisdom teeth) generally don’t develop until late teens or shortly thereafter. Due to limited space in the jaw, these molars can become impacted, causing pain, swelling, and potential complications.
Country Dental’s dentists are well-versed in performing wisdom tooth extractions to alleviate discomfort and prevent issues such as impaction, infection, and damage to neighboring teeth.
Wisdom teeth extraction involves a careful assessment of your oral health and their location within the jaw. We may take X-rays to determine the best approach for your oral surgery. However, sometimes Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) is recommended for further evaluation
Depending on the complexity of our assessment, the oral surgeon may perform a simple extraction for a fully erupted wisdom tooth or surgical extractions for impacted or partially erupted teeth. Surgical wisdom teeth extractions often involve creating an incision to access the tooth.
In some cases, bone removal is required to allow for atraumatic removal. Sutures are always required when this approach is necessary.
Tooth Extractions
A tooth extraction is a common oral surgery practice that extends beyond wisdom teeth. We may perform tooth extractions for various reasons, including:
- Severely decayed or damaged teeth
- Orthodontic treatment purposes
- Or to address issues such as overcrowding of the teeth
In cases of severely decayed or infected teeth, our dentists prioritize the removal of the affected tooth to prevent the spread of infection and alleviate pain. Tooth extractions may also be a part of an orthodontic treatment plan, to create space for proper teeth alignment.
Tooth extractions often require the administration of local anesthesia. Sedation helps to ensure the patient’s comfort, followed by the careful extraction of the targeted tooth using specialized dental instruments.
Bone Grafts
Bone grafting is an oral surgery procedure performed by our dentist to augment or enhance the bone density in the patient’s jaw. Bone graphs are often necessary in situations where the patient plans to undergo dental implant placement or placement of a dental bridge and there is insufficient natural bone to support the dental implant.
During a bone grafting procedure, our dentist will harvest the patient’s bone or place bone scaffold acquired for other donors. This material can be sourced from the patient (autograft), a donor (allograft), or from synthetic materials. The graft material is then strategically placed in the deficient area of the jaw.
Over time, the bone graft integrates with the existing bone, promoting new bone growth. This creates a more stable and supportive foundation for successful dental implant placement and the healing is faster from a simple extraction.
Bone Augmentation
Bone augmentation, also known as ridge augmentation, is an oral surgery procedure aimed at enhancing the height and width of the jawbone. Our dentists may recommend this procedure when patients have experienced bone loss due to factors such as tooth loss, trauma, or periodontal disease.
The bone augmentation process involves the placement of graft material onto the existing bone. This can be combined with barrier membranes to guide bone regeneration.
The goal is to rebuild the bone structure to a level suitable for various dental procedures, including dental implant placement or improving the aesthetics of the smile. Bone augmentation contributes to the overall success and longevity of dental interventions.
Biopsy Services
Biopsy services provided by our Fergus dental clinic play a crucial role in the diagnosis and treatment of oral pathologies. When suspicious lesions, tumors, or abnormalities are detected in the oral and maxillofacial region, we may recommend a biopsy. This involves obtaining a tissue sample for examination.
Our oral surgeons carefully extract a small portion of the affected tissue during a biopsy procedure. The tissue sample is then sent to a pathology laboratory for analysis.
Biopsies aid in determining the nature of the pathology, whether it is benign or malignant, and guide the development of an appropriate treatment plan.
Early detection through biopsy can significantly improve the chances of successful oral treatment and recovery.
Key Considerations for
You as An Oral Surgery Patient
Preoperative Evaluation
Before undergoing any surgery, you will receive a thorough preoperative evaluation. This involves a comprehensive assessment of your medical history, oral health status, and any existing conditions that may impact the surgical procedure. X-rays and imaging studies are often conducted to provide our dentists with a clear understanding of your anatomy.
Anesthesia & Sedation Options
Here at Country Dental, we prioritize patient comfort and safety during oral surgery procedures. Depending on the complexity of the surgery and your preferences, various anesthesia and sedation options may be offered. Local anesthesia is commonly used to numb the surgical site, while sedation options, such as anaesthesia or intravenous (IV) sedation, may be recommended for patients with anxiety, dental phobia, or for more extensive surgery procedures.
Postoperative Care & Recovery
Postoperative care is a critical aspect of our oral surgery services. Our Fergus dentists provide detailed instructions on postoperative care and recovery to ensure optimal healing. This may include guidelines on managing pain, swelling, and potential complications. We encourage our dental patients to follow these instructions diligently to promote a smooth recovery process.
Follow-Up Appointments
Following the surgery, our Country Dental clinic will schedule follow-up appointments. These are necessary to monitor your progress and address any concerns or questions that may arise during the recovery period. The follow-up dental appointments are an opportunity for our dentists to assess the success of the oral surgery, make any necessary adjustments, and ensure your overall satisfaction with the outcomes.
