Importance of Professional Dental Cleaning

Teeth Cleaning for Better Oral Health

Every year, millions of people go to their dentist for a checkup and professional teeth cleaning.

Oral health is an important factor in our daily lives because our overall health is related to our oral health. There is mounting evidence that a buildup of bacteria and/or plaque in the mouth can travel to other parts of the body, causing serious health problems.

It is recommended that you see your dentist twice a year for an overall checkup of your oral health and to have professional teeth cleaning. If you don’t already have an appointment for your next visit, feel free to call us here at one of our three Country Dental clinic in  Fergus.

What Do they Do in Professional Teeth Cleaning?

Teeth cleaning is sometimes called a dental prophylaxis. It is referring to the removal of plaque and calculus, as well as stains from the teeth both above and below the gum line. Professional teeth cleaning involves scaling and polishing to remove plaque, as well as to keep plaque from attaching itself to the teeth in the future.

What to Expect During Cleaning

Your dentist will usually do a thorough inspection of your teeth and gums first. This will possibly be followed by a full set of x-rays to ensure that you do not have any cavities in your teeth. If the x-ray does show a cavity, your dentist will make arrangements to correct the problem, or any other dental problems he may find, before you see the hygienist for your professional teeth cleaning.

Teeth Cleaning Steps

Cleaning your teeth takes just a few steps.

  • Your hygienist will begin by inspecting your mouth for bleeding or inflamed gums, infections, sores, or any other concerns.
  • Your dental hygienist will then use a cleaning agent that will free any deep level plaque that has grown around your teeth or gums.
  • By scraping along the teeth and gums, your hygienist will remove even more of the plaque that is otherwise difficult to remove.
  • Your hygienist will then floss your teeth to be certain every area has been thoroughly cleaned of all plaque.
  • A dental fluoride treatment may be applied at this time if your dentist or hygienist has recommended it.

In some cases, we may suggest protecting your teeth with dental sealants.

A professional teeth cleaning is a regular preventive measure that is very comfortable for almost everyone. Those with inflamed gums or very sensitive teeth should discuss those matters with your hygienist when you make your dental appointment or immediately upon seeing your hygienist.

The role of a dental hygienist is to provide you with appropriate measures to help you combat common dental problems between your visits, as well as during your daily routines. Your hygienist will try to motivate you to practice good oral hygiene that will encourage your optimum oral health.

At the end of your professional teeth cleaning, your dentist will discuss your oral condition with you if he has not already done so, as well as any other treatments you may need. Before you leave the dental office, this would be an excellent time to schedule your next professional teeth cleaning and checkup at Country Dental, to ensure your smile stays beautiful and healthy.
